Meet Scot McLernon
What human quality do you most admire and also most deplore?
I truly admire generosity. Not in a monetary way, (although I do admire philanthropy) but folks who give of their time, their thoughts, their talents and truly don’t keep score. My wife is this way and I see it in her every single day she give’s something to others and its with absolutely no restrictions or expectations, and she gets such personal joy from it. I’m inspired by it and I also have a front row seat.
What do i deplore – entitlement that the world owes you. Or lack of gratitude for what we have.
What is your guiltiest pleasure?
High end Napa Cabernet. Stupid, ridiculous price but man when it’s good there’s nothing like it.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
When I’m somewhere and it hits me that this is exactly the place that I want to be and with the someone(s) that i want to be with. I’m incredibly lucky in that I’ve experienced this exact thing many times – with family, with friends, at home and around the world. You know it when you feel it and it’s pretty wonderful. Here’s an example – right now we can’t get a haircut due to sheltering, so yesterday in my driveway in the warm spring time sun, my daughter and my wife cut my hair, it was hilarious for all of us and half way through I realized how special and how once in a lifetime that may have been so i savored every second of it.
What is the app you wish someone would invent?
A really great recommend engine – something that impartially recognizes my interests, my habits, my strengths, my weaknesses and intuitively identifies what I need to read, listen to, eat, cook, drink, buy, travel. Sure, there are plenty of these that do this in part, (if you watched that you’ll like this), but nothing that works holistically across the multi-faceted personalities of our lives that I mention here.
In this short time, any tips from working from home?
Get up, shower, get dressed and go to work. We’ve all worked in our PJ’s and we’re much more productive if you actually “go to work”. And make a list. Shelly Palmer has some great tips on this.
What is the most fun in your job?
I’ve been truly blessed to work with and learn from so many talented people. I’ve always taken a lot of pride in seeing the success of those that I’ve worked with. I look around and see so many that have grown into leadership positions and we still connect quite often. Just this past weekend I caught up with a couple of folks that are working through the unique challenges we’re facing right now, and while 911 or 2008 aren’t exactly like this, there were lessons learned then that we discussed that can still apply today. One more related to this: Last year SF BIG honored me with bestowing a sales award in my name. I can think of few things as incredible as that and last November I was asked to present that award to Chris Klein – a truly humbling, exhilarating moment that I know I’ll cherish always.
Any secret places/hang out/food in the Bay Area that you can clue us in on?
I don’t spend as much time as I used to in the city but I still think the gem of the Marina is sitting at the bar at Bistro Aix for their seared Ahi and for those of you that are on or get down to the Peninsula the single best food truck burrito is on the east side of 101 at the highway 84 east exit just outside the cement plant. It’s not to be missed, grilled chicken with guac, to die for.
